TWO FATHERS ARE LEARNING LESSONS OF 'ALL MY SONS'

The last time that John Lithgow and Patrick Wilson participated in the kind of theater exercises that they did to prepare for the current Broadway revival of All My Sons was in drama school.

Simon McBurney, the director, "had us take turns acting out a ball of cellophane slowly uncrumpling," said Mr. Lithgow, who plays Joe Keller, a likable machinery manufacturer. "That's the one we joked that we'd be embarrassed to have reported."

AN EXPERT IN AUDACITY TRIES ARTHUR MILLER

OVER a dinner of lamb meatballs and potato croquettes at the Norwood, a private club in Chelsea, Simon McBurney, the director of the Broadway revival of All My Sons, recalled talking with Arthur Miller about his work before the playwright's death in 2005

Mr. McBurney remembered Mr. Miller’s saying, "In America I've always felt that people have either tried to honor it too much to the letter or there has been this heavy hand of naturalism on it, and nothing has been taken to the hilt."

ARTHUR MILLER’S “ALL MY SONS”
TOP GROSSING PLAY ON BROADWAY
$684,002 FOR THE WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 28th

The eagerly anticipated production of Arthur Miller’s ALL MY SONS starring John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest, Patrick Wilson, and Katie Holmes, directed by Simon McBurney, was the top grossing play on Broadway for the week ending Sunday, September 28th at the Schoenfeld Theatre, with a total of $684,002 for 8 preview performances.  ALL MY SONS was the only non-musical production in the top ten grossing shows.

The limited engagement plays through January 11, 2009.

The cast of ALL MY SONS also features Becky Ann Baker (Sue Bayliss), Christian Camargo (George Deever), Jordan Gelber (Frank Lubey), Danielle Ferland (Lydia Lubey), Damian Young (Dr. Jim Bayliss), and Michael D’Addario (Bert).

Arthur Miller's first successful play, ALL MY SONS won the Tony Award for the author in 1947 and ran for 328 performances on Broadway. Miller took his inspiration from a true story about a successful business man who knowingly sold the government defective airplane parts during World War II with tragic consequences. The truth comes out and his life unravels when his son prepares to marry his business partner's daughter.

Producer Eric Falkenstein has confirmed that John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest, Patrick Wilson and Katie Holmes will star in a new Broadway production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons directed by Simon McBurney scheduled to open on Broadway this fall.

Tony Award® nominee Tom Pye will design sets and costumes (Top Girls, Cyrano de Bergerac, The Glass Menagerie, Fiddler on the Roof and Medea).

Arthur Miller's first successful play, All My Sons won the Tony Award for the author in 1947 and ran for 328 performances on Broadway. Eric Falkenstein was the lead producer of the Tony Award winning Bridge & Tunnel, and for Spalding Gray: Stories Left to Tell. His co-producing credits include The Crucible, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Democracy, Whoopi, The History Boys, Butley, Coram Boy, The Seafarer, The Country Girl, and Thurgood.

Arthur Miller's plays include Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, A View from the Bridge, A Memory of Two Mondays, After the Fall, Incident at Vichy, The Price, The Creation of the World and Other Business, The Archbishop's Ceiling, The American Clock, Playing for Time, The Ride Down Mt. Morgan, The Last Yankee, Broken Glass, Mr. Peters' Connections, Resurrection Blues, and Finishing the Picture. Other works include the novel "Focus," the film The Misfits, and the texts for "In Russia," "In the Country," and "Chinese Encounters," in collaboration with his wife, the photographer Inge Morath. Memoirs include "Salesman in Beijing" and "Timebends." Short fiction includes the collection "I Don't Need You Anymore" and the novella "Homely Girl, A Life And Other Stories." His numerous awards include two New York Drama Critics Circle Awards, two Emmy Awards and three Tony Awards, a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Pulitzer Prize.

The first production of All My Sons earned 1947 Tony Awards for author Miller and director Elia Kazan. That production starred Ed Begley and Karl Malden. The play was later adapted for the screen in 1948 featuring Edward G. Robinson and Burt Lancaster. A 1987 revival was presented at the John Golden Theatre starring Richard Kiley.
